Brentford are poised to complete the signing of Christian Eriksen on a deal until the end of the season.

The Dane has passed all the necessary medical heart checks and has been deemed fit to return.

Eriksen had been training with Jong Ajax, the Dutch club’s reserve team, to build fitness for his expected return to competitive football.

The Bees are expected to tie up a deal before the transfer window closes, and given Eriksen is not bound by the transfer window, Brentford are hopeful he can be included in their 25-man Premier League squad this month.

Having passed exhaustive medical checks in December, the 29-year-old was cleared to return to competitive football, after suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch during Denmark's Euro 2020 meeting with Finland on June 12.

Several clubs from across the continent have been monitoring his services, but his preference has always been to return to the Premier League, where he spent six and a half seasons with Tottenham before joining Inter Milan in January 2020.

Eriksen’s contract with Inter was terminated in December due to Italian regulations preventing him from playing in Serie A as he is fitted with a defibrillator.

‘I don’t know the exact numbers of players with heart issues but if they are mentally ready to return there is no reason why they shouldn’t continue,’ said Bees manager Frank, who coached Eriksen when he was Denmark Under 17 boss 13 years ago.

‘If they have passed every test they need to live the rest of their life normally. It is good for the player. ‘Christian is a fantastic person and I’m sure he’ll handle a comeback well.’

Frank added: ‘I really hope he comes back to top-class football. He says he wants to play for Denmark at the World Cup this year. I hope he succeeds.

‘He was the biggest Danish star before Euro 2020 and, if he gets up to speed, he will be again. I’ve seen him grow from a young boy into one of the world’s best players.’
